Why We Love Bellafill for Acne Scars

Written By: Belinda Stewart

In my professional experience, I have seen so many people who suffer from acne scars created while they were adolescents or even as adults while we become experts at our own extractions.  Both can lead to devastating scarring and hyperpigmentation.  Most acne scar treatments aim to either remove or replace abnormal tissue and stimulate new collagen formation to fill in old scars. There are several different acne scar removal treatments, and acne scars come in 3 main types (rolling, boxcar, icepick and combinations of the three). Rolling scars are like broad, low hills, while boxcar scars have a thick, hard center, often white, that pulls down.  Icepick scars are very narrow and deep. These are all “atrophic” scars meaning there is an overall loss of skin.  Due to the variety of the acne scar types, a combined approach is often needed for optimal results especially for those deeper and older scars.

Bellafill is a real solution and amazing approach for acne scars.  It is also FDA approved for the correction of moderate to severe, atrophic facial acne scars.  This filler offers a great treatment choice that is proven to be safe, effective, and long lasting with minimal to no downtime. It is an excellent option for rolling scars and can be used in combination with other acne scar treatments to provide the best results. In fact,  over 90% of patients in clinical trials were satisfied with results 12 months after treatment.  We have personally seen amazing satisfaction with clients who have opted for this treatment.

Bellafill® is a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) collagen filler that works in two ways. The filler provides immediate volume below pitted acne scars to lift them to the level of the surrounding skin. The PMMA microspheres also create a supports system that allows your body’s own collagen production.  Who doesn’t like immediate results?

Bellafill® can be used alone or in combination with other treatments for acne scarring. Depending on the severity of your scarring, we may suggest laser treatments including MicroLaser Peel Repair and CO2 laser resurfacing as well as a series of chemical peels. We also personally love the SkinMedical Peels for our clients.

Whatever the case, we offer several options for every skin type, for a consultation call us at 918.392.8606.

Volbella – The Newest Lip Filler

Written By: Belinda Stewart

Whether you have always had small lips or your lips have lost their fullness with age, Emerge Medical & Well Spa’s goal is to give you the perfect pout.  One of my biggest request or fear when doing lips is will “I” get the dreaded “duck lip”.  Because of our customized lip augmentation approach and the soft and smooth consistency of Volbella, patients can rest assure they will leave our office with beautifully enhanced lips. Every patient has a unique facial anatomy, so the lip injection technique must be tailored to the patient’s other facial features in order to produce natural looking lips.  Making sure your injector has had the latest most advanced training and techniques will also increase the success of your treatment.  I personally love to go to as many trainings as possible.  Each time me and our other nurses witness a new technique, it just adds to our tool belt on the best approach.  It makes doing lip augmentations incredibly fun and fulfilling, pun totally intended!

Volbella injections can add or restore lip volume, create a more defined lip shape, soften “lipstick” lines (or smoker’s lines), lift downturned corners of the mouth, and enhance the cupid’s bow and vermillion border.  Who doesn’t want that!  Let me brag and add to this wonderful treatment!  We can also add a little Va Va Voom when we customize your lip enhancement with Juvederm Ultra or Ultra Plus for those who want a smooth lip with a little extra plump.

Traditional lip fillers usually last around 6 months.  But Volbella is the first filler to use Vycross technology, a special blending of hyaluronic acid (a naturally occuring sugar found in our skin).  This technology allows for lift and longevity of the product while also reducing swelling and down-time and our patients and staff are loving it!

If you’ve been thinking about refreshing yourself, now is the time.  Perfect your pout and profile because LIPS ARE IN!

Are Injectables Safe?

Written By: Belinda Stewart

I often get asked are fillers safe. The most common scenario presented by concerned clients: I have such sensitive skin and if anything can go wrong it will happen to me. I’ve got good news! Recent studies have shown very little risk or side effects. Check out studies in the JAMA Journal.

Most fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, at least the ones I prefer. Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring substance created by our own body. It’s what keeps our skin hydrated among other wonderful benefits. This is why there is little to no allergic reactions.

By the age of 40 we have lost nearly 50% compared to our early 20! Sad, I know but true. What we do need to worry about is if you are afraid of bruising. Ladies and gentlemen, if you stick a needle in the skin for any reason, you risk the chance of getting a bruise and possible inflammation at the site. Oh, and please let us know if you are allergic to lidocaine. The liquid gold is swimming in it! We can use without it. Lastly, make sure your injector is trained and well versed in possible complications. Having the proper antidote if injected in a vessel will insure all goes well.

Here at Emerge, each of our 3 nurses are Maser Trained Injectors including myself and I’m also the only Allergan certified injectable trainer in the Tulsa metro area. You can trust that you’re in the right hands with us! We would love to meet you to talk about your needs! Give us a call for a complimentary consultation 918.392.8606.

A Note From A Nurse on injectables

Written By: Belinda Stewart

As a Nurse Injector for the last 9 years, I often get asked which filler is the best for me. In my attempt to not name specific brands, I personally choose the one that is the easiest to work with, lasting, forgiving, and made specifically for the area I want to treat. There are some that last 6 months as well as a few that claim up to five years. I would really try to dissuade a first time person from choosing the five year filler because what if you just don’t like it. These fillers are somewhat permanent and hard to remove. I would suggest for beginners to start with one that is hyaluaric acid. These are very forgiving and easy to dissolve if you are uncomfortable with your new look. So don’t be afraid. We have the perfect filler for lips, cheek bones, smile lines, and last but not least, those supper unfriendly dark circles under the eyes!

These days, it is hard to miss the newest episode of Housewives of your “own” County. It becomes confusing on what is natural and what looks let’s say unfamiliar. In our quest to look younger, radiant, rested, etc… It is important to find the right injector who will listen to your goals and not what their artist view of a natural face looks like. Ask lots of questions, when and where have they been trained and has it been recently. Fillers have come a long way in the last few years and boy has it been more fun than ever. When in the right hands, your goals can be met realistically.

Girl! That lady went way too far! Look her lips! I have never seen that much cheekbone, even when I visited the San Diego Zoo! Are you finding yourself saying the same thing in your head? Fillers do not have to be this drastic. More often than not, I find these specific clients in my practice when they are chasing the fill. The face is not completely symmetric or completely without lines. Even babies have nasolabial folds! When it is hard for someone to look at the overall improvement of their face, and focus on the one or two “imperfections”, it is easy to want more, more, and even MORE! Be careful, and don’t let that look become your new look. Not unless you want it too.

At Emerge, we are dedicated to meeting our clients needs and we take the time to listen, but we also know the importance of giving you our professional advice. After all, what was good for your friend may not be good for you and the look you’re desiring. We happily offer complimentary consultations and would love to meet with you and help you anyway we can! 918.392.8606

When I first tried Botox

Do you remember the first time you heard about Botox? I do. I was a teenager. I’d hear about it while watching my favorite movies or TV shows or reading magazines depicting how awful it was, how it would freeze your entire face and make you look even worse.

Ring any bells? I thought, “Who would ever do this to themselves? Why would you want to alter your appearance like this or freeze your face?” I swore right then and there I would never do anything like that.

I mean good grief Hollywood, get it together.

But then, I was 28 and the line between my eyebrows had made itself a home. I hadn’t told anyone how self conscious I was about it, I just…lived with it.  At the time I was working as a receptionist at a medical spa in Georgetown, TX and our nurse was taking Botox appointments.

My 40 year old coworker next to me stood up and said “It’s my turn!” I paused and said to myself, “wait…what?”

When she returned she had a few tiny pin marks on her forehead. I asked, “You get Botox!?!” “Of course,” she said, “I have for years.” I went on to ask her what it was like and how it worked and eventually got up the courage to point out the line between my brows and told her how self conscious I was about it.  She was confident that Botox was the answer and begged me to try it.

Remembering everything I had heard about it, I still wasn’t sure I was ready to take the leap.

A week later I thought, what the heck, I’ll try it. Obviously vigorously massaging my frown lines at night after a hot shower wasn’t doing me any favors, so this might be the golden ticket. Luckily my best friend was visiting so I convinced her to come along. I was a bundle of nerves. My palms were sweating. I had no idea what to expect.

When I finally made it to the treatment room, after discussing my “problem areas” the nurse was very kind and gentle as she began my treatment. Suddenly, there was a pinch! To distract myself from the needle going into my forehead I began asking her random questions like,  “aren’t puppies like so cute?”

After about 5-7 pricks, it was over. I was a little sore and other than a small headache I felt fine.

When I got home I immediately looked in the mirror to see if it was frozen yet. Nope. (It can take up to 2 weeks to kick in) I continued to check each day until about day nine when I noticed my lines no longer appeared when I frowned. Score.

Here are my real results about 9 days after my 1st treatment of 30 units. I know you can’t really tell, but I was making the exact same expression in both pictures, honest. Look at the frown on the far left; I could have held a pencil in my glabella!  And check out the picture on the right, I mean c’mon! Those wrinkles are gone, baby! You might have noticed my eyebrows, how they’re a little uneven, but the nurse fixed me up, I just didn’t take a picture. Another bonus, higher arches!

Not a day goes by that I don’t thank my co-worker for giving me the push I needed to try this treatment. It has given me back my confidence and stopped my aging dead in its tracks. To this day I get 30 units about every 3-4 months to keep my deep wrinkles at bay. It starts with prevention, folks. For all of you that have never tried Botox or sworn it off because of what you’ve heard, I urge you to give it chance if you have any insecurities about expression lines like I did. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Let’s Talk Botox

Written By: Ric Harrison

Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way first;

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a highly purified muscle toxin, isolated from a certain strain of bacteria. The toxin blocks the chemical signal between the muscle and the nerve, leading to temporary paralysis of the muscle. The paralysis occurs over 1 to 5 days and peaks in two to four weeks. Results last from three to six months. The effect gradually wears off, allowing the dynamic wrinkle to return.

Botox is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. Side-effects are minimal for most people as long as you follow a few simple things. You need to refrain from lying down for about 2 hours after your treatments and wait several hours before doing any strenuous exercise.  Botox is the only FDA approved drug treatment option for crows feet and frown lines. The FDA approved Botox in 2002 for the temporary improvement of wrinkles between the eyebrows, known as frown lines in adults. Botox is a product of Allergan.

Now for the interesting stuff!

I first had Botox when in was in my late 30’s. Usually for a special occasion and I wanted to look a bit firmer (really a bit younger), know what I mean? Now that I’m in my early fifties I have Botox done on a regular basis (about every 3 to 6 months). I have never looked better and others have told me so.

Taking care of ourselves as we age is so important. Eating healthy, exercising and getting enough sleep are good ways to take care of our bodies. I’ve found that Botox not only makes me look better but also gives me a lift in my self-image. The better I feel emotionally; the better I care for myself. A little help from Botox is just the shot (injection) that I want. It’s the whole package for me.

For the next couple of months, I’ll be blogging about Botox, facial fillers and injectables. Look for a new blog each week and let me know what you would like more information about. I’d love to hear from you.

JUVÉDERM®, Smooth, Plump & Lift!!!

Written By: Ric Harrison

Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way first;

JUVÉDERM® is a collection of fillers made from hyaluronic acid (HA). What’s interesting about HA is that it’s a natural substance in the skin that delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture and softness, and adds volume. Each product in the JUVÉDERM® collection of fillers is made from a modified form of HA.

Want to lift or contour your cheeks? How about smooth out some wrinkles and lines? Would you love to enhance your lips? Then Juvederm is your go to for these issues. Juvederm is fast and simple and does a great job. I was not disappointed after trying it.

My lips were the first area I tried; I was a bit nervous so I was conservative about the first treatment. Needless to say, I went back for a bit more and got precisely what I was wanting.

Even better news is that it lasts about a year for most people.

Next was a lift to the cheeks and the smoothing of some lines. I have always taken good care of my skin but the signs of aging were there. I just wanted an enhancement and the results were immediate.

My experience with Juvederm was smooth and uplifting (pun intended)!  Instant results! Nonsurgical, natural looking and long lasting results. What could be better? What have you got to lose?

Remember up at the top in the boring stuff I talked about hyaluronic acid (HA)? It is also available in capsule form. The HA capsule will enhance the Juvederm treatment and assist you in looking better, longer; at least that was my experience.  You can find the HA capsules at your local health food store or online.

For more information about JUVÉDERM®; treatments, appointments and cost, please contact Emerge Medical and Well Spa at 918.392.8606.

Kybella, huh?

Written By: Ric Harrison

Let’s get the boring stuff out of the way first;

KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” It is not known if Kybella is safe and effective for use outside of the submental area or in children less than 18 years of age.

I’ve had Kybella injections and I am glad I did. I have inherited a lot of good genes from my ancestors but I also inherited a few that I wasn’t so keen on.  The older I got, the worse my double got and I was frustrated. There wasn’t anything I could about it outside of liposuction or plastic surgery, until recently. I had researched and had spoken with a couple of surgeons about my options and cost. I just couldn’t do it, the cost and the down time were not in my budget. I wasn’t willing to spend the money for plastic surgery and I also didn’t want to spend an entire vacation recuperating. My vacations are for traveling and having fun.

Just when I thought I’d never get rid of the double chin I began hearing about a new treatment for the dreaded double chin, it was Kybella. I started doing some research about Kybella, the results and the cost and I was sold.

I must admit that I had tried one other treatment before finding out about Kybella, Ultherapy.  Ultherapy didn’t give me the results I wanted or expected but Kybella has done just the opposite. It’s AFFORDABLE and IT WORKS (for most anyway).  After my 1st treatment the side effects I experienced with Kybella was some swelling and bruising. However, on my 2nd treatment I still experienced some swelling but very little bruising. Of course, everyone’s side effects may not be the same.  And the good news, it’s easy to hide swelling and/or bruising with a scarf or turtleneck. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt (much)!

For more information about Kybella; treatment, appointments and cost, please contact Emerge Medical & Well Spa at 918.392.8606.

Meet Ric

Written by: Ric Harrison

We’d like you to meet Ric, he’s a very close friend of ours that has agreed to share his journey through injectabes with all of you. Take it away, Ric.

Why I chose Emerge Medical and Well Spa.

Hi, my name is Ric. I’m in my early 50’s. I’m married and I’m Poppy to 3 precious boys ages 2, 4, & 6. I’m a professional in the medical field and I consider myself a happy person. The only thing I didn’t like was that I was aging and it showed.

I didn’t like those little lines around my eyes, the lines on my forehead, and the fat under my chin. These are just a couple of reasons I started considering injectables. In the last several years I had some Botox treatments (not on a regular basis) but I liked the results. I knew a little bit, but not enough. I had considered plastic surgery but didn’t like the cost, the risk or the downtime.

I decided to make appointments with a couple of different spas/treatment facilities in the area for interviews that offer the treatments I was considering. I chose Emerge Medical and Well Spa because they gave the best first impression and they appeared to be the most knowledgeable about what they were doing. I like the fact that the people doing the treatments were experienced and educated and I also liked the fact that they told me about the products, how they were made and what I could expect. They didn’t “promise” me that I would look 10 years younger or get the exact results I wanted but they did say they would work with me, to help me get to the best results I could with what I had to work with.  I haven’t been disappointed yet. I have not only become a happy client but I’ve made new friends.

The ladies that have done my facials, my lash extensions, given me Botox, Kybella, Juvederm have become a part of my life. I didn’t realize the vulnerability I would experience while receiving these services. We’ve talked about life, death, kids and just about anything else that came up. We’ve laughed and I’ve even cried as I told the story of my mothers’ recent death.

When I became a client at Emerge I expected (and received) excellent services and results, but what I also received was the unexpected surprise of more inner beauty and that is priceless.

Injectables: The Rundown

Co-written with Belinda Stewart

Raise your hand if you want to know more about injectables.

So, what are they anyway? Injectables are products that are able to be injected into the skin of the face for the purpose of reversing the signs of aging. Products in this family include a few you may have heard of like Botox or Juvederm.

Well, here at Emerge we offer a wide selection of injectables for almost every need or desire. I’ll give you a quick rundown.

Botox and Dysport are going to temporarily paralyze the muscles in the face to prevent you from making certain expressions that cause those deep wrinkles. For example, frown lines.

Don’t worry though, we’re not going to freeze your entire face, but we can talk more about that later.

Now let’s talk about fillers. First you have Juverdem Ultra/Ultra Plus and Restylane. These dermal fillers are going to add structure and lift to the face where volume is lost.  They can also be used for filling in deeper lines, like the nasolabial folds around your mouth and let’s not forgot those thinning lips!  These are great products for adding volume to the lips.  The sky’s the limit with these bad boys. They can go almost anywhere.

Next you have Juvederm Voluma and Restylane Lyft. They are also fillers but unlike the others they are thicker, more like puddy, better for molding and adding volume. The best place for these amazing fillers are the cheeks and/or deep crevices like the hollows of your temples. Let’s bring those perky apples back where they belong!

Then there’s Juvederm Volbella, made specifically for the lips and the lines around them. The beauty of this product is that you can add subtle volume aiming at a more glossy lip filling in all those pesky lines we gain with age.  This adds support and structure to those aging lips.  You can combine the Volbella and Juvederm Ultra to get the best of both worlds, plump and glossy lips!  Volbella is also a great product to fill in those notorious hollows under your eyes.  What an amazing and versatile product!  Aging be gone!

Speaking of a disappearing act, ladies and gentlemen meet Kybella. She’s our friend that makes all our dreams of getting rid of our double chin once and for all come true and she’s permanent. No lie. So say bye bye (Wait, did anyone else just start singing N’Sync in their heads?) to all those facial workouts and walk around with your chiseled chin up.  (Don’t even pretend you haven’t tried to do this workout.)

And last, but certainly not least, there’s BellaFill. It’s the only filler out there proven to last up to 5 years and it can be used for acne scarring. It’s pretty versatile and can give you some impressive results.

So there you have it. After all that how do you feel? Similar to the way you feel when you recite “how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?” Well hang in there, we’ll slow it down for you and look at each one a little closer in the coming weeks. And if you’re thinking “that’s a lot of injectables, how on earth do you keep them straight,” worry no more. We got this.

Next up, we’re going to be giving you a glimpse into a few of our own personal experiences, but in the mean time, if you want to know which injectable is right for you, call us at 918.392.8606 and ask for a complimentary consultation with one of our nurses.
